Make Money Online . . . Yeah Right
If you spend any time online (and if you're reading this, you do), whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or just browsing around on Google, you've more than likely been assaulted by countless “opportunities” about how to make money online.
And when I say countless, I mean that. There must be thousands of them. Every day, it seems, the latest and greatest way to make money online is born and people are puking the opportunity all over you and everyone else. These are the same people that were pushing some other how to make money online biz-op just last week.
Now, more than ever, the internet is rife with online money-making opportunities. On virtually every page of social media, we are bombarded with ads and links calling to us . . .
“Learn more!”
“Get started now!”
Just go to Google and type ‘Ways to make money online', and you will get more than 169 MILLION results!!
So what happens? The natural reaction, of course. The words ‘how to make money online' begin to make you sick. Right? You don't want anything to do with it because life experience has taught you to doubt all of them because there's so much crap out there. Our skeptical nature and our past experiences steer our reaction to the defensive almost immediately. You may have even tried a few of them and wasted both time and money with nothing to show for it. Because most of the ‘make money online' opportunities are really ‘waste money online' opportunities.
And even if you've not yet ventured into the world of internet marketing or attempted to make money online, you know others who have tried and failed. So why would you even bother, right?
So when a new or another ‘make money online opportunity' comes along, you wouldn't touch it with a 10-meter cattle prod (name that movie). Am I right? Why would you? If others failed before you, surely you'd fail just as miserably.
How to Make Money Online . . . Yeah Right
And that reaction, that feeling, is relatively normal. Especially if you've tried and failed in the past. If you burn your hand on the stove, odds are it'll never happen again. And that's the same story here. You get burned once, maybe twice, and that's it. Never again.
So the natural skepticism and disbelief is the first reaction. But guess what else happens? I'll give you an example.
Let's look at it from a real world perspective. Imagine you've just started dating someone. You've just met and you're off to dinner and a movie! If that first, or even second date, doesn't go are you done dating forever? Are you writing off the opposite sex forever? And what if you happen to get your heart broken? Are you done dating for good, ready to assume a life of celibacy? Of course not.
Why? Because if you swear off the opposite sex for good, you'll never find the one that's right for you. That right fit. The one with just the right amount of charm, beauty and quirkiness that makes them the perfect fit for you. And you'll wander the earth aimlessly, lonely and alone, always wondering what might have been. Ok maybe not, but you get the point.
This same philosophy is true in business. Just because you had a bad experience or two in the past doesn't mean it's time to throw in the towel. If you reject every new opportunity that comes along, you'll ultimately miss out on the right one. The one that's the right fit for you. Let's face it, there's not one business opportunity that's right for everyone. And just because someone else succeeded in it doesn't make it right for you. However, just because someone else failed in it doesn't make it WRONG for you either. You are not them.
Now, keep in mind, that does NOT mean you should dive headfirst into every opportunity that comes along, hoping ‘this is the one!' Nor should you jump every time someone you know claims to have cracked the code on how to make money online.
But what it DOES mean is that you should keep an open mind. Be willing to at least look and listen to see what it's all about. And when you're through looking and listening, do some homework. Take the time to do some due diligence and see if it's the right fit for you.
Choosing the Right ‘Make Money Online' Opportunity
So when you're finally ready to start learning how to make money online, what should you be looking for? First, consider the product. What are they selling? Who needs it? Who wants it? How hard or easy will it be to sell?
The best way, in my experience, to actually make money online is to offer or promote something that everyone needs. Something that anyone can use and that a LOT of people would want. The whole world should be your target market. But that's rarely the case with majority of online or home based business opportunities.
For instance, if you're promoting a weight loss product, your potential customer base is overweight people. Granted, that's half of the world's population (thanks U.S.), but you've also eliminated half of the world's population as possible customers.
The same goes for cosmetics. You've limited your market to women, and only those that wear makeup.
How about health and wellness? Same thing. Since more than half of the world is overweight, it's pretty clear that less than half of people are concerned with health and wellness and it's unlikely they would spend any money on your products, no matter how good they are. So not everyone is going to be interested in your lotions, potions or pills, regardless of how hard you try to “sell them” on it. And that's exactly my point. You shouldn't have to ‘sell people' on your product or service. It should be something people are able to see value in and want to have.
The next time you're presented with an opportunity to make money online, here are some questions you should be asking yourself:
1) What is the product?
2) Who is the target market?
3) How hard/easy is it going to be to sell?
4) Do I have to make calls, and bug my friends and family?
5) What is the commission?
6) What are the requirements to get paid?
Those are just a few for starters. Ideally the answers should be:
1) Something anyone can use or benefit from
2) Anyone (over the age of 18)
3) Very easy
4) Nope
5) A high percentage
6) None. Sell a product and get paid
Now, obviously that's not often the case when it comes to being able to make money online or from home. Most of the companies out there in the network marketing industry don't have a product or products for everyone. As mentioned above, they often pigeon-hole their distributors right out of the gate. As a result, the target market is limited. Not only that, but it's difficult to sell their product because people aren't looking for it, they may have never even heard of it before. And therefore you have to convince them that they need it. You have to ‘sell them' on it. In a network marketing company I was in previously, their TOP SELLING product was something no one ever heard of before. It literally had to be SOLD by explaining to people what it was and why they needed it. Think anyone enjoys doing that?
And what about the prospecting methods they're still teaching? Do you think anyone likes the idea of calling up their friends and family and asking them for a favor?'
‘Do you keep your options open?'
‘Can you help me out'?
Blah, blah, blah.
Hey, go make a list of 200 people you know and let's start calling them! AAAHHHHHHH!
And even if you happen to be good on the phone, and presenting your business opportunity, and even closing, what are the odds that someone, anyone, on your team will duplicate your efforts and be able to do what you do? Slim to none.
There's also no leverage in that. Wasting time making phone calls, sitting down with ONE person to show them what a great opportunity you have, only to have them tell you they're not interested. Time wasted.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Let's pretend for a moment that you're good at sales, and recruiting, and closing . . . that you actually enjoy it. You should be fairly compensated for your efforts, right? What percentage commission to you consider reasonable?
Most companies pay 10% commissions or less. That's dreadful. Let's break it down: the average retail price for a product in most network marketing companies is around $30. So for every product you sell, you get . . . $3? Let's even go so far as to suspend reality for a second and say the price-point on a product is $100. You wish, I know. But even then you're getting $10 or less for making a sale. How many products do you need to sell in order to make any significant income? How many products would you have to sell to cover your cellphone bill? How about your car payment? Your rent or mortgage? How many sales would it take to replace your income? A LOT!
‘Oh, but my down-line makes sales too'! Is that what you're thinking? Well keep in mind, most MLM and network marketing companies have requirements in order for you to get paid. It's not just earning a commission on the sale of a product or products. Oh no. You have to build up enough volume points, sometimes on more than one “leg” and then you need to reach some sort of threshold in order to trigger a commission check. And if you don't reach and eclipse that threshold by a certain deadline, all those hard earned points wash away and you get absolutely nothing for the work you did and the sales you made.
Does any of this sound familiar? If you've ever spent ANY time in the home business industry, it should.
I know, I've painted a fairly bleak picture of the home business industry. And sadly, what I've described is true for most people. Many of whom don't even understand their own compensation plan. “Oh, I get 100% of the volume!” That's great, on what percentage of that volume do you get paid? 10%? That's what I thought.
But there IS good news. It actually is possible to meet all of those criteria on the list above. You CAN make money online or from home without skipping some of the things on that list.
There are products out there that anyone can benefit from and use. Even people that are in another networking marketing or MLM opportunity. And it would actually HELP THEM build that business. A product that would even benefit individuals, small business owners and even large companies.
There are products that practically sell themselves, because of everything it can do for those who purchase it. Because people actually WANT it. They understand the value of it, they see the potential in it, and they realize the benefit of having it. So you don't have to SELL it, you simply give them access to it.
And there are even products that pay large commissions more than other companies. You heard me. With no requirements. If you're an active affiliate marketing the product, you get paid. You sell a product, you get paid. No volume accrual, no other silly requirements.
Would you be interested in such a product? Of course you would. Anyone that's interested in how to make money online or looking to start a home business would and should. You should be interested in meeting as many of those above criteria as possible.
And if you said NO, you would not be interested in such products, go back up and revisit those 6 criteria and see how many of them your current company meets. It won't be many.
So . . .
Would you like to know what product I'm talking about?
Would you like to know what product can be marketed to anyone anywhere?
Would you like to know what product pays high commissions without any nonsensical requirements attached to it?
Would you like to know how you can start making money from home without picking up the phone?
If you want to know how to make money online, for real, then you need to . . .
Great article Dr. Steve. I think for the most part if the product has the “if your life depended on it” quality, then people would buy and buy again…i.e. dating, weight loss, cure for cancer… But something like a business opportunity, people will always lean on their job as a crutch. Until their life depended on it, when they’ve lost their job, when the bills are coming in, when they’re facing foreclosure…then that’s when they will see the opportunities. Unfortunately that’s too late.
Successful entrepreneurs have somewhat cultivated this in their mentality and have build up a critical mass that it becomes a “do or die” situation. Which it should be because we all sell your time for cheap and have been conditioned from birth that if you work hard for the next 30 to 40 years, you will have a nice nest egg that should last you another 10-20 years without having to work. Then we see young successful people making thounsands per week or month and we see retirees still greeting customers at Wal-Mart and we refuse to wake up at the reality in front of us and start focusing on building our own business. Which boggles my mind!!!!! Stop waiting…start building!
You’re right, Phillip. Most people wait until it’s too late to start planning for the ‘what if’. And much of that is programming. It’s the way the system, our parents included, teach us how to “make a living”. Go to school, get good grades, get a job, work hard for 40+ years and then hope you have enough money to retire and live out the rest of your days in comfort. It’s an antiquated and broken system that continues to be propagated despite the changing times.
I would encourage anyone reading this to start thinking about our future. Not your boss’s future, but YOUR future. If you don’t want to work for the rest of your life and then HOPE to have enough money to survive, it’s time to take control and do something about it before it’s too late!
I love this post. Very inspiring to keep moving!
Thanks Alecia! I appreciate it! Yes, keep moving forward!

Great advice to never give up looking for the right business for making money online. The right product is there for everyone!
Interesting. There is a shift coming in business. More people are being replaced with technology. More people are learning to use technology to replace their J O B. Guess that’s why we are all here.

With all the scams and desensitizing out there, most people will shrink back at any mention of home-based business. But I’m grateful for the training I’ve received that shows how you can earn people’s trust to the point where they’ll know that you’re not messing with their minds when offering an opportunity to them. Thanks, Steve for this great article on what to advise people to look for when choosing an opportunity.
Very point on Dr, Steve…Make Money Online. The points that you hit on are correct my friend and so true..
May i add that most should most diffidently apply the rule of…Never pic up a piece of paper Twice…Follow me on this…
.
.
…If you are in one business then stick with that and MASTER that business…DO NOT pick up another piece of info (Paper) email, unless it involves what you are currently doing.
We tend to get hit with a massive amount of emails as you stated thus deterring us away from our real task that’s at hand.
I could go on and on with this message, but i believe you and your readers will and can follow me on this.
Stick with one thing and MASTER IT! BOOM!
I like that you went transparent in showing how the traditional mlm and network marketing companies aren’t a cost or time or energy-effective way to make an income online. When I found this company, I knew I was in the right place because instead of my family and friends avoiding me in order to not get prospected, they were actually asking me what I was doing because they followed my posts and read my articles.
This is a great article Dr. Steve. Well written and full of value. Thanks for the insight!
Great information. Everyone looking to start a business online should be asking themselves the questions you have mentioned in the article. It would help them choose the right business instead of trying more than one to see where they can make the money. Thanks for sharing.
Once I really understood what having all 6 of those criteria really meant for my business a light bulb not only went off above my head, it exploded! Thanks for laying it all down with a very clear and understandable way of what’s possible using the power of the internet Dr. Steve.
Awesome post Dr. Steve and you hit the nail on the coffin bro.
